Triumph Through Adversity - Waterfront Park Charleston, South Carolina

Updated: Jun 30

Our family decided to take a trip to Waterfront Park in Charleston, South Carolina (Pineapple Fountain) in January to have an adventure and get some content for our YouTube channel. We did not know at the time that the world as we knew it was about to come to a screeching halt.

Soon after returning to Costa Rica from our Christmas trip to the U.S., the global coronavirus crisis escalated into something that our world has never seen. Our world would never be the same.

3 months later we revisited the content that we recorded in January and started to learn about the story of Waterfront Park in Charleston, South Carolina. Surprisingly, there was a message of triumph that can be used in these times of global adversity.

The Waterfront Park project began under the direction of Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. in the late 1970's and went through over a decade of planning before breaking ground in 1988. The project was set to be completed by May 4th of 1989 but 8 months before the projected completion date the infamous Hurricane Hugo dealt a smashing blow to both the Charleston area and also the Waterfront Park Project. Hurricane Hugo delivered $1 million worth of damage to the unfinished park but they still managed to complete the project only 1 week late!

Many people around the world had been making big plans for 2020 and almost nobody saw this pandemic coming and it blindsided most of the world. But if we can take an example from the Charleston Waterfront Park project and see that life can deal us a very bad hand at times and if we stay focused and persevere, there is a possibility that these major disruptions can be viewed as setbacks and not something that ends your dreams.

The Coronavirus Pandemic came at us like a Hurricane and many people lost their lives, other people lost their jobs, and most of us had our lives completely changed. But hopefully, most of us will be able to weather this storm and wake up on the other side of the destruction. Our plans, goals, and dreams may have been delayed but we hope to see the world not only recover, but excel like Waterfront Park.
